And Their Most Famous Compositions

Step 1

Directions for Step 1: Watch the three "Maestro's Movements" videos. You must watch these with your tutor. Be sure to have your tutor document completion in your Crossover Academy Junior Portfolio. Also, document that you have watched each video by submitting the Great Composers Video Completion Form.

Step 2

Using the Stories of the Great Composers book, you will learn about seven world famous composers and listen to one of their most famous compositions. 

The composers you will learn about are:

  • Johann Sebastian Bach
  • Franz Joseph Haydn
  • Ludwig Van Beethoven
  • Franz Shubert
  • Felix Mendelssohn and Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel
  • Frederic Francois Chopin

And one of these American composers:

Stephen Foster - OR - John Phillip Sousa

Copies of  the Great Composers book are available at the Crossover Center.

Directions for Step 2: 

  • First, read the historical sketch and musician's story with your tutor. It is permissible for a tutor to read the book to you, or for you and your tutor to take turns reading.
  • Next, listen to the composition for that musician. Each Stories of the Great Composers book has an audio CD in the back pocket.
  • The HP desktop computers have built in CD-ROM drives. Choose one of these computers. Listen with earphones! 
  • Third, take the composer quiz. When you have read a composer's historical sketch and story and have listened to the musical composition, come back to this page. Scroll down to the name of the composer you learned about and take the online quiz for that composer.

About the Quizzes 

At the beginning of the quiz you will be asked to provide some personal information, such as name, date, and the name of the tutor working with you.

We must have this information so we can document that you have completed the quiz.

To receive credit for a quiz, you must pass it with a score of 80% or higher. You may take a quiz up to three times in order to pass it.

Be sure to have your tutor document each completed part of this program in your Crossover Academy Junior Portfolio. This should be updated each time you complete a designated part of the program.
