Course 6: Syntax

Smart Rules for Good Writing

There is a WRITING WORKSHOP requirement for this course. See Mrs. Hanley to set up an appointment time for these workshop sessions.

Note: Privacy law necessitates a warning that whenever a person follows external links, such as watching videos, he or she may be exposed to unintended third party tracking.

Course 6 Completion Form

When you fully complete each part of the course, submit the appropriate form.

Directions:

  • This course is based on Khan Academy's program: Grammar. You will complete two segments of this Grammar course: Syntax: Sentences and Clauses and Syntax: Conventions of Standard English.
  • You must obtain a Crossover user name and password so that your work can be tracked and documented. If you already have these credentials, check with Mrs. Hanley to be sure these will log you in as part of Crossover. If you have forgotten your login credentials, Mrs. Hanley can recover them for you.
  • Go to: https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/grammar. The Khan Academy web site will open to the exact page you need in a separate browser window, which means this page will remain open in a tab behind it.
  • Make sure you log in before watching any videos. If someone else is still logged in on the computer you are using, you must sign that person out and then log yourself in. Otherwise, that person will get credit for your work!
  • Scroll down to Syntax: Sentences and Clauses. Start there.
  • Complete each lesson by watching the video(s) to the end and completing the interactive questions that follow.
  • You must watch each video to the end for it to register on your Khan Academy transcript as completed. You must complete the interactive questions for each lesson to receive credit for that lesson.
  • Wherever appropriate, watch the lesson video and do the corresponding test activity immediately. Then move on to the next lesson video, followed by the test activity.
  • Khan Academy automatically sends a weekly progress report to Crossover, providing detailed information about what each student has done that week. So, we always know what you have completed and when you completed it. We also know if you only start a video but don't finish it or pull out of a lesson without completing it.
  • Submit a completion form for each part of the course by using the links provided on the left side of the page under the yellow burst.
  • Syntax Part 1 - Sentences and Clauses is broken into 4 sections with 21 lessons total:
    • Introduction to sentences
    • Types of sentences

    • Phrases and clauses
    • Unit Test
  • Syntax Part 2 - Conventions of Standard English is broken into 3 sections with 12 lessons total:

  • Writing Workshop - Three sessions:

    • Session 2: Formula for Writing a Five Paragraph Essay

  • Be sure to have a tutor document each completed lesson in your Crossover Academy Pro Portfolio. This should be updated each time you complete a lesson or workshop session.
